UNDERGRADUATE CERTIFICATE IN LEADERSHIP STUDIES
Offered by the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies in the College of Education

Description:

The 18 credit Certificate in Leadership Studies is an undergraduate program that is interdisciplinary, multidimensional, experiential and multicultural. It combines social change theories of leadership with practical leadership and service-learning experiences. The Certificate program prepares students for real-life leadership roles on campus, in home communities, in statewide positions, and in national and international communities. Award of certificate will be acknowledged on recipient’s academic transcript.

Requirements:

The Certificate in Leadership Studies consists of at least 18 hours of course work. Following is a listing of core courses for the Certificate in Leadership Studies.

Introduction to Leadership Theory and Practice (3)
This is the introductory course for all students seeking a Certificate in Leadership Studies. The focus of this course is on developing knowledge, skills and values in the areas of individual development and partnership relationships.

Leadership and Action in Groups and Communities (3)
This course examines leadership theory, knowledge and skills necessary for effective leadership roles in organizational and community settings.

Leadership for Change (3)
This is an advanced leadership course that examines the change process and prepare leaders who understand and are effective in working with individuals and groups in leading and managing change.

Leadership in Community Settings I (3)
This service learning course offers participants an opportunity to put into practice the knowledge, theory, and skills they have learned in prerequisite courses in the Certificate program.

Leadership in Community Settings II (3)
This course provides opportunities for a practicum internship experience or advanced work within a community service site in management and policy consulting roles.

Supporting Leadership Course (3)
Students in the Certificate in Leadership Studies will take an additional three hour course in their major or other department that is related to leadership studies.
